We estimated how many math cubes it would take to measure our classroom. The students counted cubes by 10's and found out after their estimations were made, it took 448 cubes to measure their classroom. They also discovered that 448 cubes equaled the length of six students. This was an activity that was student initiated.
We celebrated Advent and the celebration of Jesus' birth. We created Baby Jesus wreaths as well as Advent wreaths.
We created Gingerbread babies after listening to the story by Jan Brett. The students used their fine motor skills to sew and stuff and create their own gingerbread babies.
We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We listened to a story called, "More Than Anything Else". The story is about a little boy named "Booker" (Booker T Washington). Booker wanted to learn to read and write but wasn't able to go to school because he had to work with his family to support them. Booker learned to write his name in the dirt after he worked. The students simulated writing their names in the dirt using finger paint and painting diluted glue on the paper and sprinkling it with sand. The students learned that Martin Luther King Jr. helped to make it possible for all boys and girls to go to school.
